About Us

Our main goal is to make sure every cat that comes through our café finds a permanent loving home! We use our high visibility location to promote the responsible adoption of rescued and rehabilitated cats while demonstrating the best care for all cats. In providing the best care possible we cover all medical costs, rehabilitation costs, and adoption costs for each cat to further minimize barriers to adoption. We also pride ourselves on working with local rescue organizations, hiring people who further support our mission and love of cats as well as donating to local animal charities right here in Costa Rica!

The world’s first cat café, Cat Flower Garden, opened in Taipei, Taiwan in 1998. Soon, what began as a venture to provide young urbanites the chance to unwind after a hectic day became a favorite tourist destination. Cat Cafés soon spread to Japan and China where they have grown in such numbers that nearly every city has one! Following this huge success Cafés began to open in America, with New York housing the first one, and the trend has only widened with a cat café in several states all with the goal to serve cats in need from local animal shelters. In All of Europe, Cat Cafés have sprung up with some of the swankiest being centered on Tea Time with the Queen or the Eifel tower in Paris! Even Africa and Saudi Arabia have joined the cause for success. The trend of having a great cup of coffee with a feline companion has become the staple of many tourists and will only continue to grow as people further support animal rescue with a cup of joe!

There will be approximately 10+ cats and kittens in the Cat Lounge at any given time, all available for adoption.
Yes! All of the cats are examined by a veterinarian before arrival and are spayed/neutered, tested for feline Leukemia and feline AIDS, receive vaccinations for Feline Distemper, Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Rabies, and receive monthly flea prevention.
Sorry but NO. The Cat Café is strictly for cats and kittens looking for their forever homes.
The answer is maybe. Dependent on the individual family’s needs, current cat population, and availability at the café we may be able to help re-home a cat in need. This will be done on a case-by-case basis and will require proof of vaccinations and castration, a test for Fel-Luekemia / Fel-AIDS, and other contagious diseases. The cats must be free of all external and internal parasites before entering the café. If one can not afford to castrate their animal or provide medical care we may be able to help with these costs. Please do not abandon your cat at the café as we are not open 24 hours a day and your cat will not be seen by a veterinarian at this location.

Here at Coffee Cat Café we think the bond between an animal and its family is life-altering and should not be limited based on the age of either the cat or family members. As such, we do not place an age limit on visiting with our furry members. On our end, we know that kittens and cats are very fragile. Some can be tiny and easily overlooked by children. This can be hazardous for both your child and our feline companions. Children are naturally curious and excitable which is wonderful. However, cats prefer slow movements, soft voices, and a very gentle touch. When cats get anxious they are very unhappy and can become ill or act out to protect themselves. Unfortunately, if our kittens or cats have negative experiences with visitors who do not understand this, they can develop a lifelong fear of children and people. This negatively affects their ability to be accepted into a loving and forever home. As such we require all children under the age of 10 years old to be accompanied by an adult who can care for both their child’s unique needs and also the unique needs of our cat’s environment.

Our staff reserves the right to ask you and your child(ren) to leave and return another time should they be disruptive or upsetting to the cats and if they are ignoring the rules and policies. We understand children can have a bad day and we hope you understand that returning another time may be in the best interest of everyone. We believe this will help everyone enjoy their time at the cafe more and not only encourage a better interaction with the adoptable cats, but also a safer and stable environment for all.

Entrance into the cat lounge area is free with the purchase of a beverage or food item. Or there is a fee of ₡3.000 per person. There is no time limit for this fee. By you supporting the cat lounge, we’re able to care for the cats so that we can continue finding forever homes. Thank you for supporting our cause!

Rules for the Cat Lounge

  • Our cats are at home here, you have entered the cat house, so when they go about their daily business please do not disturb them.
  • Never wake up or pet a sleeping cat.
  • Do Not Feed the Cats… No matter how much they beg! Our cats eat a balanced diet consistent with their activity levels and health. Too much food can cause obesity in our cats which will lead to many physical constraints and health conditions. Human food, no matter how delicious, can be dangerous to a cat’s digestive system and cause severe reactions.
  • Our cats are in high demand! Each cat will give affection and attention based on its individual needs and wants. Please do not force a cat to interact with you or prevent it from leaving your area should it wish to. Our cats’ love is 100% consensual.
  • Photographs are encouraged but WITHOUT FLASH.
  • Cats are particularly attractive to children of all ages. Please MINDFULLY WATCH YOUR CHILD(REN) in the cat lounge and ensure they are being kind and courteous to not only our feline friends but also other customers and cat enthusiasts who are there to visit the cats as well.

No, electronic payments made through Placetopay do not generate additional costs for the buyer.

In the first instance, check if an email confirming the transaction has arrived to the account registered email at the time of payment. If you have not received it, email info@coffeecatcr.com to confirm the transaction status.

For each transaction approved through Placetopay, you will receive a proof of payment with the purchase reference in the email address that you indicated at the time of payment.
